Meet The New Boss

user-pic

DeLay is out as Majority Leader, and we don't yet know who's in. A question to focus on when we enter the Blunt/Boehner/Whomever regime is this -- were there any issues of any consequence over the past five years on which the New Boss took a different stance from the Old Boss? Does the New Boss favor any initiatives the Old Boss opposed? Does the New Boss oppose any initiatives the Old Boss favored? My very, very, very strong guess is that the answers to all those questions will be "no." This is an effort, in other words, to get out from under the "taint of corruption" without changing anything.

Who cares? Impeach the bastards before they destroy our country.

While you're absolutely correct that the differences in substance between Old Boss and New Boss will be slight, there have to be differences in style.  Even a delegation as nasty as the GOP can't have many guys around as mean as DeLay.  He's really something special.

The really interesting question to me is how much he will still be able to bribe/cajole/terrorize GOP outliers into toeing the line without being Majority Leader.  How much of his considerable power derived from the office, and how much from his personal viciousness?

Perhaps this is just a cosmetic attempt.  However, cutting the head off the monster will disable the monster.  It really is effective to target leadership if you want to cripple a movement.  It's not just a question of shared ideology, but also of competence and, in Delay's case, degree of ruthlessness and a single-minded understanding of and obsession with power.

Which was the whole goal of the phoney indictments in Texas. Becareful or your true colors begin to show. What do y'all have cooked up for going after the next guy?

SFC - I am going to assume that you care about the truth of the matter and are not just trying to troll here.

Delay was indicted because he created, oversaw and managed a massive illegal political money-machine that channeled barely concealed bribes through a network of phony charities to help elect and pay-off Republicans.

He was not targeted because he was the Republican leader. He was Republican leader because he was ruthless enough to pursue these methods to gain power.

Perhaps the lilywhite Tom Delay that exists in your imagination is the problem. We can quibble over legal technicalities, but unless you provide some evidence that he did not in fact do what he has done, your argument is facetious at best.

My guess would be that the effectiveness of the New Boss will depend on the continuance of the money machine that, as Josh pointed out, enforced the discipline of the Delay era. It seems likely that the oceans of cash will, to some degree, dry up, making it harder to keep members in line and, at least in theory, open up the possibility of a difference of opinion among House Republicans.

Then why was he not charged with bribery? It's you who have the facts wrong. He was charged witrh violating campaign financing laws that didn't exist when he supposedly violated them (which is why the charges were thrown out) and he was re-indicted by Ronnie Earl to keep charges against him since the Republicans have a rule that a member may not serve in a leadership role while they are under indictment (a rule that the new "Law and Order Democrats" don't have for some strange reason). This last charge will soon be tossed since "money laundering" requires "funds from illegal activity" (according to Texas law), and since it is still legal for Republicans to raise campaign money in Texas, the defenition of the crime wont be met.

You may call it "quibbling" some call it the "law" oh, and in this country I don't have to show he didn't do something... you are supposed to show he did...that's some more of that "quibbling" again.
Why wasn't he charged with bribery?
Maybe because bribery is a notoriously difficult charge to get to stick?
The money laundering charges may just be the tip of the iceburg. Ever heard of a superceding indictment?

californiarealitycheck,

I'm going to add the word "completely". I'm afraid they have already partially destroyed some of what is the best about the USA. It's going to take quite awhile (if ever) to undo the damage done by this bunch of crooked, unethical, dishonest con artists who claim they love Jesus to pull off their cons. "Despicable" is not strong enough a word to describe them. I'll settle for "criminal" from Bush on down fairly far.

Meet the New Boss;
Same as the Old Boss...

This may go down in history as an attempt to save face in the aftermath of the Great Abramoff Squeal like Matt suggested.  The only way to avoid getting fooled again is to put someone like Arlen Specter in charge.  Specter has a tendency to think for himself and has already spoken out about the corruption issues....

Actually tlees2 I'm going to go ahead and say that they've done some absolutely irreversible damage to the country.  I'll be specific about it too: they have absolutely ingrained into a large minority of the public (at best) that it is absolutely worth trading our most sacred liberties for any amount of added security.  That dramatic turn-about from an America that used to scream "Give me liberty or give me death!" to "Take my liberty, spare me death" means that for a majority of the voting public the political culture of the country has fundamentally changed from living up to the promises of the Revolution and forming a more perfect Union to merely guarding what advances we have made during 230 years of independence and even rolling some of them back so that we can live.  This transition may have occurred before, but it was this administration that really went forth and exploited it in a more permanent way (Nixon of course abused power in the same way, but those abuses saw a major backlash and to be perfectly honest I don't think there will be a huge backlash to the erosion of liberties this time around).

That America is dead.  It will never be back.

california reality  You write who cares, Impeach .....

Who would you impeach? and who would be next in line. The President is shielded. Look how hard it was to convict John Gotti. Didn't it take a wire?

The best we can hope for is imprisonment, and a power shift because Americans get angry, but even then, corruption would still be lurking.

Welcome to the machine. Does anyone really believe that even if,  Delay was imprisoned,  he still couldn’t control from his cell. Ask those in the Corrections business who have experience with racketeering..

Wasn’t someone killed over a gambling boat?

Does any one know, if there are other skeletons out there?

His cronies on K street can still do his bidding.

The Republicans are not going to relinquish control. Whitewashing the façade doesn’t change the questionable foundation.

This cry for new leadership is a deflection. All the recipients of Delay and Abramhoff money, didn’t squeal to loud because of their indignation.

When the minority asked for crossover votes,  to defeat one sided legislation, what did these Republican do?.

They let money influence their decisions because it helped bring them to power and protect their chances for reelection.

It is true “the love of money brings injurious things”

Is it, were sorry for the disgrace to our office or is it,  sorry we got caught?

When members were finally exposed,  that the money they received may have been because of racketeering, money laundering or just plain fraud. They think a few Hail Mary’s and give to charity, absolves them from being complicit?

This is just my opinion, and I care

Then why was he not charged with bribery? It's you who have the facts wrong. He was charged witrh violating campaign financing laws that didn't exist ... This last charge will soon be tossed since "money laundering" requires "funds from illegal activity"...
Bribery?  That's coming pards - Delay was bought and paid for and Abramoff is the star witness.  As for campaign finance laws, it's been illegal for corporations to give politicians and for politicians to receive money from corporations since Texas was an independent republic in the 1850's.  They didn't want big rich corporations owing the government; wanted to keep it government by, of and for the people, don't you know?  So Delay had to funnel the corporate cash to his pals in the Texas Legislature somehow.  Like a common, two-bit, filthy, dirty, rotten drug dealing criminal, he chose money laundering.
In Texas, a person commits the offense of money laundering if the person knowingly acquires or maintains an interest in, conceals, possesses, transfers, or transports the proceeds of criminal activity; or conducts, supervises, or facilitates a transaction involving the proceeds of criminal activity.  Furthermore, knowledge of the specific nature of the criminal activity giving rise to the proceeds is not required to establish a culpable mental state.  "Criminal activity" means any offense, including any preparatory offense, that is classified as a felony under the laws of this state or the United States; or punishable by confinement for more than one year under the laws of another state.  The presumption of innnocence is rebutted where there is overwhelming evidence beyond a reasonable doubt.
Henry David Thoreau said there is no odor so bad as that from goodness tainted.  The problem with Delay - he was never any good so the stench is twice as bad.  Verdict:  Hold your nose, say adios and make plans to visit him in the pen: Delay will be pleading guilty to both state and federal charges within a year.

We'll know when the BugMan is really in trouble when truth teller, patriot, spreader of death and freedom, former Alabama National Guardsman and Vietnam draft doger, friend and buddy of 'Kenny Boy' Lay, and CEO of ElBusto Energy and other bankrupt enterprises, George W. Bush,  starts prayin' for DeLay. Of course Bush is pretty busy these days prayin' for dead folks he helped put in the gound.

Arlen Specter owes America two - one for the "single-bullet theory" insanity and the other for his treatment of Anita Hill. To paraphrase a line from Spielberg's "Amistad" - it's time for a magnanimous gesture for posterity.

Hello to the new Boss same as The old Boss.

US History teacher speaking here: Texas was admitted to the Union in 1845 and was a fully functioning state by February 1846.

Well, let's both hope you're wrong.

Representative Louise Slaughter's response to Bush's radio address was dead on. The Republican Party has become an "engine of patronage." Mark Shields pointed out on the News Hour last night that Tom DeLay never met a regulation he didn't hate. That meant that every corporation in the US was intent on feeding his coffers.

The result of all the patronage is a West Virginia Sago Mine that had "extensive safety problems" according to the federal regulators and 276 violations in 2004 and 2005, yet paid only $23,986 in fines. http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2006-01-04-mine-violations_x.
htm?POE=NEWISVA

Along with cutting back on inspectors and easing up on citations, less than half of all fines on coal mines have been paid under the Bush administration.

Not just in this most recent and egregious case, the republicans HAVE engaged in an "unprecedented attempt to eliminate the will of the American people from the legislative process." Just as Representative Slaughter has so eloquently pointed out. In that way the New Boss will be just like the Old Boss.
http://democrats.org/a/2006/01/congresswoman_l.php

When did it become disfunctional?

When W replaced Ann Richards?

Come on... when did facts start mattering, it is legal for PAC's to accept corporate donations (soft money) in Texas (which is what happened) it is legal to send that money to National parties (which happend) it is legal for National parties to send "Hard money" to state candidates (which happend). ergo no "criminal proceeds" and no laundering. Just the facts.

Come on... when did facts start mattering ...
Bingo...an admission against interest.  First the right wingers display contempt for the facts; now they show utter contempt for the law.  They want the facts to fit the preconceptions.  Sadly, when they don't, it is easier for them to ignore the facts than change the preconceptions.
With no access to offense reports, witness statements or grand jury testimony, anyone who claims to know the facts in Delay's money laundering case is lying.  The only known known (as Rummy might say) is the law.  The Texas Election Code, §253.094, provides that a corporation or labor organization shall not make a political contribution or political expenditure that is not authorized by that subchapter.  It further provides that an offense under that section is a felony of the third degree.  So sorry, but Texas election law no where permits corporate contributions to individual candidates directly or indirectly.

Actually I was using humor to point out the guy couldn't even get the dates right, let alone the law.

So sorry, but Texas election law no where permits corporate contributions to individual candidates
Correct, however that is not what happend, and that is NOT what DeLay has even been charged with. Check it out. I'll go as slow as possible. Soft (or corporate)money was given to a PAC (again legal) PAC money was sent to the RNC (again legal) hard (individually donated) money was given to candidates in Texas (again legal). So, I ask again where are the "proceeds of illegal activity" required to commit money laundering? Since DeLay is not charged with any "illegal activities" and none of the "activities" he engaged in were illegal, there are no "proceeds of illegal activity" I know it sucks for you guys not to be able to just get him with something , just because you hate him so much, but that doggone law thing keeps getting in the way.

Yea, but what happens when the FBI reveals a list of who wore a ware in recent months?  If they convinced Duke Cunningham to do it, and the Wall Street Jouranl says that Abramoff has fingered another sixty -- chances are that DeLay may have either worn one himself in the interests of a diminished sentence, or one of his buddies has him on tape.  Republicans need to be careful whom they get behind these days.  Make it hard for them -- connect every mentioned candidate to the Abramoff-DeLay-Cunningham money machine.

Because those bribes were federal crimes and right now he is being tried in state court? Because Earle doesn't have jurisdiction? Because Abramoff just testified Tuesday? Plenty of time for Federal indictments in the weeks and months to come.

And BTW the judge already threw out that stupid "funds" claim. It is illegal to donate corporate money in Texas.

You are just continuing to repeat Republican Talking Points, that trial will be settled in court, not by you summarily giving Delay a Get Out of Jail Card.

We have no idea who will be left standing on this one. Under the House Rules an, indictment removes you from leadership jobs, and any power sharing deal could shatter at any time depending on when prosecuters choose to take what to Grand Jury.

I don't know if fundamentally the money has dried up, but over the next few weeks it is going to be hard to figure out who to deliver the bag to now that Bagman and Bugman are both on the sidelines.
