First Fan
Amy Sullivan remarks, in re: the Rose Bowl, that she "hate[s] to see a victory go to the president's favorite team." Since the President didn't actually attend Texas, I find his Longhorns posturing a bit puzzling when, after all, his real alma mater is one half (albeit the lesser one) of the greatest college football rivalry of them all.
But if Bush is such a big fan of Texas football, then why didn't he go to the game? Or to last year's Rose Bowl? Other successful Texas sports teams -- the Astros in the World Series, the Spurs in the 2003 and 2005 NBA Championships -- have likewise gone without the support of the first fan. Wouldn't snagging tickets to these prime events be a better way to abuse the authority of his office than all this torture and spying? More fun, too? That's what I'd do if I were president -- good seats for every big game!

W a 'Horns fan? More like a frontrunner. Why would he want to associate with the school that wouldn't associate with him. He's got to be an Aggie fan (the school with daddy's papers and the ex-CIA chief as president), but they've been awful recently.

With his Harvard MBA he straddles said great rivalry.
Even so, I imagine the place he's the biggest fan of is the School of the Americas.

1. Other than pictures of him throwing horns back at U of T fans, has there ever been a sign of him "posturing"?
2. Isn't that where one of his daughters went to school? That might explain it.

Mathew, are you formally announcing your candidacy? You got my vote.
Remember the debates between Kerry and Bush, and people noticed this little lump on Bush’s back? There was a theory going around that he was getting advice through a listening device as he debated Kerry. So we see Bush has a long history of listening devices, I can picture him hiding in the cellar of the Whitehouse ensconced in a dark corner listening to wire taps while slugging away at a bottle of whisky.
Personally I think he is listening to conversations between Bill Clinton and his own father H.W. Bush who I have heard are great friends now. I guess Bill is the son H.W. always wanted but sadly never had and George W. is sulking.

There might be Democrats or other dissidents present!
Imagine having everyone in the Rose Bowl with a Kerry bumper sticker on their vehicle forcibly removed . . .

I agree with Rea. Come to think of it, I cannot recall one single tme where Bush has been in a situation among regular Americans of all kinds -- even when he visited New Orleans and Mississippi after Katrina, it was all staged sets.

I'm from Florida and a Harvard grad, and I certainly root for FSU first and foremost. The Game is great and all, but it's nothing compared to FSU winning the national championship in '99 and '93.
Also, re: the Astros and Spurs question. It's clear that Bush is a baseball man where it comes to sports, but his loyalties are pretty darn well tied to the Rangers, so supporting the Astros is probably a tricky situation for him. If the Rangers were in the World Series (stop laughing now), I'm pretty sure he'd make an appearance.
Okay, I've officially taken this post way too seriously...

Harvard-Yale bigger than Army-Navy? Tough call, and I've got to opt for the latter.
Before the War in Iraq started up, President Bush did a fairly decent job in mingling with the 'common' folk. There's the bullhorn scene after 9/11 and the sitting with the U.S. athletes at Salt Lake City during the opening ceremonies in the 2002 Winter Olympics. Much of his insular treatment didn't arise until after debate surrounding Iraq started to heat up.
