Neil Bush: No Billy Carter
John Gorenfeld at Alternet reports that the president's kid brother Neil has been traveling through Asia in the company of the Rev. Sun Myung Moon, self-proclaimed messiah and sole proprietor of the loyal Republican Washington Times, promoting (ready for this?) a $200 billion "Peace King Tunnel"--51 underwater miles joining Alaska to Russia, perhaps to enable brother George to look more closely into the soul of Vladimir Putin. Gorenfeld adds: "While Neil Bush and Moon's church couldn't be reached for comment on the tunnel or his speaking fees, a brochure from Moon's Family Federation underscores that the project is 'God's fervent desire.'"
Anyone else remember when the cavortings of Jimmy Carter's errant brother Billy with terrorist Moammar Qaddafi amounted to big news? New York Post, where are you? "All Things Considered?" National Enquirer?

I remember Billy Carter making the headlines; I remember Roger Clinton making the headlines. Why don't we hear more about Neil Bush's activities? He's flying under the MSM's radar on this one.

One theme of the Bushes is the ways the four sons have enriched themselves with the help of various rightwing and foreign sources. This is a constant including the returning of the favors when possible. While this arose during the first campaign, a bit, when Harkin was raised but soon disappeared.
Not only brothers were raked over the coals when Democrats were in the presidency but so too were foreign connections and suggestions of dishonorable behavior. Why not more investigation of this?

Hilarious. I clicked through the link over on Talking Points thinking that the "underwater tunnel between Russia and Alaska" was some sort of joke- a reference to some other boondoggle of great magnitude- but uhm, unhappily, this is really happening. Setting aside the hypocrisy of their coverage of Roger Clinton and Billy Carter, I have a pure business question for our lethargic media: Wouldn't crazy Neil's excellent adventures sell papers?

One does wonder whether such a "peace bridge" to the far east could bring one closer to generous, lovin' without charge asian prostitutes. Just a hypothetical.
(If you don't get that, google Neil+divorce case)
At least Billy gave us a nice beer can, and Roger a nice album for future ironists.

Hell, with all the stupid bridges that they are building in Alaska--this one may be the dumbest yet.
Despite this stupidity, I still might give it a 50/50 cahcne of getting off the ground.
Glad that they are working so hard to rebuild New Orleans too.

Sheesh, don't you sometimes wonder whether they really do have this genetics all figured out? When you look at something like presidential families, it just gets so wack. Also nature v. nurture. My rational mind is fascinated by all the new developments on that front and tries to keep up with all the stories for the layman (yes, I know CW science lately that they are inextricably and complicately interwined.) But my heart is not ashamed to admit I still do very much appreciate those stories about candidate's moms, and who mom always liked best.
On this particular story, if the enquiring minds would dig, I'd feel safe making a bet they'd find Bandar's name evoked sooner or later. :-)

The Bushes are no fools. Thanks to Global Warming the Bering Straits will become a premier beach and golf resort destination in 30 years. This tunnel will just connect the Club Meds on the opposite banks.

p.s. Dems have to be careful about kvetching about anything Moon-related, though. They've been known to partake of the fact that the Rev. gives good party.

I agree with janeboatler concerning news of this proposed tunnel flying under the mainstream media.
But I would like to go further and state that the MSM is still intentionally doing a weak job of reporting on the corruptness of government and, presently, the Republican/Bush administration.
Oh, that we could have a MSM that is worth a damn.

In addition to peace bridges to nowhere, and prostitutes http://www.cnn.com/2003/ALLPOLITICS/11/25/bush.brother.reut),Ol' Neil's been jogging with exiled russian oligarchs in the baltics http://blogs.washingtonpost.com/worldopinionroundup/2005/11/bushs
_brother_a.html#comment-11756464) and lobbying for scientology (http://www.cultnews.com/archives/000342.html).
Then again, Barbara and George HW have always liked the Moonies (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/national/longterm/cult/unif
ication/main.htm).
And brother Marvin's had very odd fatal accidents in his driveway (http://www.waynemadsenreport.com/marvinbush.htm)
So a little bit o' Billy Beer is almost charming in hindsight

I think everyone can see what is going on:
Bush: Now that Marvin is out of the way, what are we going to do to keep Neil busy?
Cheney: I have a resort he could 'manage' in Haiti.
Rove: Too many black people. How about hooking him up with the moonies to build something.
Cheney: How about an underwater tunnel from Alaska to Russia.
Bush: Brilliant! I'll make sure mom packs his mittens. The ones with the strings.
Rove: (wistful) I remember those mittens.
Cheney: (angry) Me too. I'll show those kids.

I have only two words to say on this idea...
"Plate Techtonics"
Alaska moving North
Asia moving South.
Hello?? Duh!

To the best of my knowledge, you can't even get to the Alaska end of this "tunnel" without a snow machine. Or is the infrastructure to build roads there planned for the next Ted Stevens' "Barrel o' Pork"?

Todd, you have forgotten that everything changed after 9/11. Criticizing the president for incompetence, corruption, outright criminality, blatant dishonesty, etc., are for those living in a 9/10 mindset.
Never mind that Bush started getting the kid glove treatment two years before 9/11.

Even odder, Neil was in the big-time religion game with then-dark horse future Pope Ratz.

What the hell was that about? One commentator....
<span class="Apple-style-span"> that Neil Bush </span><span class="Apple-style-span">co-founded</span><span class="Apple-style-span"> a Swiss-based ecumenical foundation with then-Cardinal Ratzinger in 1999. Joining the two were assorted theologians as well as Bush's longtime business associate Jaman Daniel and Prince Hassan of Jordan, President of the Club of Rome. Bush, it needn't be said, is hardly regarded for his attention to religious causes. Neither is Ratzinger noted for his ecumenism. Curiously, the foundation is listed by Dun & Bradstreet as a "management trust for purposes other than education, religion, charity or research," though an official claims the designation must be a mistranslation.</span>

To artappraiser, who says: "Dems have to be careful about kvetching about anything Moon-related, though. They've been known to partake of the fact that the Rev. gives good party."
Dems would demonstrate their ability to rise above petty party protectiveness (PPP for short) if they blew whistles, tubas, and other instruments at the Moonies. They would then give better party by themselves.

Only by fractions of a millimeter a year, if at all. I think the BART tunnel under San Francisco Bay may have the same problem?

It would almost certainly be a rail tunnel. Presumbaly its purpose would be to bring Siberia's timber and mineral resources to North American markets faster and more efficiently than loading them onto ships. Or it would, if there was a transportation infrastructure on the Siberian side of the Bering Strait. That would have to be built, too. Neil's been cavorting with Russian oligarchs, too, you say?
Meanwhile, China will be building rails north toward those Siberian resources, too.
If it's fifty miles long, it's not much longer than the Chunnel (and Japan has a 50+ mile undersea tunnel as well --- the Japanese tunnel no doubt has similar problems with seismic activity). As an engineering project, it's not particularly cutting edge.
It's not crazy, but if the Chunnel can't pay for itself, it's hard to imagine this thing doing so.

Pfeh, you people are so cynical...
I'm all for it. I mean, Sung Myung Moon is the freaking Messiah, right? I thinking, he ought to be able to pull this off for free.
And if he's not the Messiah, then this ought to put a pretty serious crimp in his right-Wing Propaganda effort.
In that case, this is way too important to trust to the government.
Nope; this is so critical that it has to be privatized.

Also not much covered by the MSM: Neil Bush's investment in a sweatshop/factory (in China?) which suffered the worst-ever fire disaster (with a tragic loss of many lives), due to unsafe conditions and poor practices; his very questionable (to say the least) educational enterprise; and of course his colorful divorce.
Those who claim we have a "liberal media" sure have some explaining to do, given the heavy coverage of other presidential brothers.

There is a danger, though, of making the media's sensationalism about Billy Carter into a positive standard. After all, some people also tried to make an issue of Clinton's brother too, and that if anything backfired. The whole issue is not really relevant to policy, although it is a curious news item.
I'm much more concerned about why Ohio Votergate 2004 AND 2005 have been dodged by the MSM. That is where the bodies are really buried.
