Scott on the Rack

From this morning's White House gaggle ...

QUESTION: On Libby.  Do you have any remorse on what you've told us?

SCOTT McCLELLAN  One, I talked about this issue yesterday.  I have faithfully carried out my duties and responsibilities to the best of my ability, both to the President and to the American people.

(continued below the fold)

QUESTION:  The best of your ability?  Or how about your credibility?

SCOTT McCLELLAN  Well, the people in this room know that I'm someone that can be trusted.

QUESTION:  How do you know that?

SCOTT McCLELLAN  You can look at comments that people in this room have made.

QUESTION:  Have you taken a poll on this?  (Laughter.)

SCOTT McCLELLAN  Do you want to?

     QUESTION:  No.  (Laughter.)

SCOTT McCLELLAN  I don't want to put anybody on the spot.  Go and look at comments that people in this room have made who know me.  I think we went through this --

QUESTION:  We know you by the record, and I can read you back the transcripts.

SCOTT McCLELLAN  You know me by my record and your dealings with me.  I am someone who has served as an advocate for the President's agenda, and that's part of my role; part of my role is also to help make sure the American people are getting an accurate account of what's going on here in Washington --

QUESTION:  It's the latter part that I'm asking about.

SCOTT McCLELLAN  Helen, hang on.  You're asking a very fair question and I would like the opportunity to respond.  Part of my responsibility is also to make sure the American people are getting an accurate account of what's going on here in Washington, D.C.  I think you all share that responsibility, and anyone that leaves an impression otherwise is leaving a false impression.  And I think people in the room who know me know that that would be the case.

QUESTION:  I wouldn't say that so glibly if I were you.

SCOTT McCLELLAN  I'm not.  I'm saying it with all seriousness.

QUESTION:  This is the first time I have heard you say you had a responsibility to the American people.  You've always said, I am an advocate, period.

SCOTT McCLELLAN  No, I've always said both those things.  You can go back and look to some of the very first interviews I gave coming into this position.

QUESTION:  So we're in Iraq by invitation?  You tell the American people that --

SCOTT McCLELLAN  And you've asked me questions in the past.  I remember way back in the beginning, you asked me questions about this, and I responded to them, and I still hold -- what I said to you at that time still stands.

QUESTION:  You think that everything you said is accurate?

     SCOTT McCLELLAN  I'm sorry?

QUESTION:  Everything you've told us in the past couple years is accurate?

SCOTT McCLELLAN  I stand by what I just said.

Who's questioning Mr. McClellan?  Is it Helen Thomas?  Were other reporters involved?  And if it was only Ms. Thomas putting Mr. McClellan on the spot, are her opinions representative of those held by the gaggle at large?

Personally, I think she's great. But it would be helpful to know whether an interest in this line of questioning is shared by other, less obstreperous reporters.

Helen seems to be the only one in that gaggle of presstitutes that is willing to challenge authority.  As Robert Fisk said:" the job of the journalist is to challenge power wherever it is."  Seems that many have forgotten their job and instead have been star struck by power.

I say go Helen.

Helen seems to be the only one in that gaggle of presstitutes that is willing to challenge authority.

Not true.  David Gregory (NBC) has gone after McClellan big-time, especially on this issue.   Helen is the only one that is willing to openly express an opinion about it.

Sadly Helen can't even be straight forward. Is it against the protocol of the WH Press Room to just read him a few verbatim quotes and say, "Scott on X date you were asked Y. You answered, 'W.' Is that still your answer?" And then say, "So you lied? Or would you characterize it as 'a gross distortion of reality?'"

The press enabled this abomination and they now suffer under it. It is poetic justice for them but a horrible injustice done to truth and democracy.

How can we believe anything this mouthpeice says?  McClellan has always stood up as an advocate for the administration and we all know that their interpretation of the truth is, shall we say..subjective.   Not only that but he has perpetuated the, uh, "misleading" talking points of the Republicans.  Misinformation like "Joe Wilson said he was sent by the VP's office", "the investigation is partisan politics..." etc.  Now these aren't verbatim quotes but they give the gist of what he spouted.  Once he unequivically said that neither Rove, Libbey, or anyone else had anything to do with the leak...well, that tanked what little credibility he had left.
Go on, Helen, put his feet to the fire.

I have read a number of these gaggle transcrips over the last two years, particularly on contentious topics.  Then I read 4-5 major newspapers the next day.  Nothing but the Press Secretary's talking point, and very occasionally a mild counter-point from a mainstream politiican of the opposing party, ever makes it into the newspaper stories.

  1. Why do the reporters bother asking these questions?
  2. Why don't the answes and their context ever make it into the news reports?

sPh

Someone convince me this is not all just meaningless theatre.  Afterwards they all go out for beers and some sing-a-longs.  On Scotty's (our) tab.

was it Gregory who tossed in that "sloppy seconds" crack about Alito?  I 'bout laughed my arse off with that one...

Krugman:  "...The long nightmare won't be over until journalists ask themselves: what did we know, when did we know, and why didn't we tell the public."

Question:  Why doesn't cut and paste work here?  Is it because I'm using Firefox?

Question:  Why doesn't cut and paste work here?  Is it because I'm using Firefox?

Use Control V to paste if the normal function doesn't.  Half the time I can't even post using Firefox and have to switch to IE.  Other times I can.  I have no explanation.

I thought I heard it was Terry Moran.

I've watched some of these "press conferences" on C-Span.  The entire thing is absolutely ludicous.  What makes things so one-sided is that the press attempts to be logical and reasonable wheras McClellen is unbound by logic and reason.  He can spout anythign he wants and if challenged, he resorts to the most amazingly twisted contortions . . .not commenting on an ongoing investigation, or my favorite, "I've already answered that question."

Jeez!

Can someone point us to the full transcript of this gaggle? I can't seem to find it on the White House website, just today's "Press Briefing," which also contains some questions related to this issue.

What a tangled web...lies, lies, lies.  Poor Scottie.  Between his own misspeakings and the lies that come out of the White House, he can't keep up.  I hope the WH pays him well.

We can only dream of a day when the press (that which retains any integrity) simply refuses to turn up and participate in the charade.

Scotty may well be wildly mistaken when he asserts that he enjoys the confidence and trust of the press, but every one of them who doesn't clearly and loudly assert otherwise is just tacitly indicating that he's right.

Thank you, Delia.  Have encountered other Firefox issues lately and may go to their new beta (such is my dislike of IE!).

I hope the WH pays him well.

Corporate America certainly will just as soon as he's sick of answering Helen Thomas's questions.

Delia beat me to the ctrl-V recommendation, but I haven’t had any trouble with Firefox.  Of course, I’m still using the icky default WYSeditor, but that’s because I’m deeply attached to my keyboard shortcuts.  I’d just be extra careful about previewing comments and posts. :)

Maybe because these kind of things don’t lend themselves to stories?  Or at least, there’s a fair amount of interpretation of "leading silences" or "evasive answers."  In all fairness to newspaper folks, I think it would be pretty difficult to coax a story out of the gaggle.  And I’m not even talking politically!

I use Firefox, and all the functions work for me.  Do you use auto format?
