What's New...
Today at TPMCafe, Gov. Tom Vilsack continues the discussion at Table for One. Auction House's Ellen Miller looks at the "business as usual" mentality that breeds corruption in Congress, using Rep Richard Pombo as a case study. Also, Matt Yglesias explains why it's ok to make fun of Bill Clinton, and reader DanielGree highlights a new book about American militarism.
Finally, we're working on improving the site, so if you have any suggestions go here.

I agree with the suggestion that the teensy weensy print size allowed in thecomment box makes it very tough to write well. Other than that, I'd say TPM Cafe is so good that we should be holding a gleeful, drunken party to celebrate the first place on the web I've seen where the conversation is really worth getting up for in the morning!
One thought on rating comments -- I know that's been under discussion. I try very hard to rate comments on just about everything except whether I agree with them or not. Clarity of thought and writing is important.
But just now, reading through the comments and responding to the latest post of "Daniel Gree" on Andrew Bacevich's essay, I realized that I was rating a particular quality in comments: whether a comment opens up the conversation, the debate, or does it try to shut down debate, prevent people from "upsetting the apple cart"? I think some fellow contributors get very uneasy when accepted "truths" are challenged. I don't rate them one way or the other. I only rate (highly!) comments which challenge all of us to think in new ways, to question long held beliefs whether from the right or left. The fact that many do just that at TPM Cafe makes this an enjoyable and valuable place to be.
