Breakdown of Law and Order: Green Edition
From the Wall Street Journal:
In Meraux, the smell of petroleum hung thick in the air. Across the highway from a Murphy Oil Corp. U.S.A. refinery, two men in yellow hazmat suits drained the contents of tanker into a canal, using a thick black hose. The canal smelled like gasoline. Asked what they were doing the men declined to comment. "I got a family, I'm not talking," one man said.
Will any of the thousands of law enforcement personnel get around to investigating this? One has to wonder what environmental degradation will occur in New Orleans not only because of the flood, but also from a sense that no one's looking. Then again, if Bush's press ban stays in effect, no one will get reports like these -- and anything goes.

Excellent point, I was doing some google searching earlier for Josh’s timeline on New Orleans and found several articles discussing the environmental impact of the flood.
The same thing is true in Iraq, the first Desert Storm had a huge impact on the environment and wildlife as well as for human beings. The ammunition used by our military is made from depleted uranium used for its armor piercing qualities. Unfortunately when it hits this stuff gets sprayed everywhere. And that is just a small example of the environmental horrors of war. No I am not diminishing the loss of human life nor do I hug trees but this is going to affect people’s health in that part of the world for years to come.
And here at home the environmental pollution created by companies who are obviously taking advantage of the flood to illegally dump toxic material into our water systems will also be affecting the health of people for years, especially children who are more susceptible to this kind of poison than healthy adults.
This is the hidden legacy of Bush and the large companies that put him in office. People will be affected by the deregulation of energy producing companies allowing them to spew more mercury into our air and the medical costs will be astronomical as the cost of health care continues to spin out of control, another legacy of the Republican Party.
As for the fellow with the family, well, I wonder if he knows what he is doing to his children. And what gets me is that familiar feeling that somehow just because he has a family that somehow excuses him from all responsibility. It reminds me of the time someone told me they would do anything to protect their family, I wanted to punch his face and I am not a violent person but I just cannot stand that particular point of view which is somehow his particular genes are more important than anything else in the world, it makes me sorry that he was able to reproduce.

It is still hard for me to believe that the general population cannot put the following together:
(environmental damage = health issues in humans = increased health care costs = less economic security) X (less tourism) X (additional costs of cleaning up the environmental degradation) = catastrophic costs to our social-eco-economic resources.
