A Confession
I wouldn't presume to speak for Senator Durbin, but Karl Rove sure has my number. Everything I've ever written criticizing the mistreatment of detainees at the hands of the American government has been designed to encourage terrorists to defeat the United States of America and set back the cause of freedom. Indeed, the entirety of my (admittedly brief) career in journalism has been motivated by nothing more than a spiteful detestation of my country and my fellow citizens, and a treasonous desire to see them brought low.
Fortunately, we have good men like Deputy Chief of Staff Rove on hand to defend the nation from dastardly Enemies of the People such as myself. Howard Dean's controversial rhetoric pales in comparison to my crimes.

Aha! I KNEW it!
See, doesn't confessing it make you feel better, Matthew?

Al,
Perhaps when you get the flag burning ammendment passed you can convict Matthew for burning the flag...in his mind's eye.
Clearly he has done it in the past, and if can just make the amendment retroacticve, you have him. Of course, even if it is not retroactive a traitor like Matthew cannot stop thinking these soon to be illegal thoughts.
Long live Karl Rove!

What i'd give to see Kommisar Rove frog-marched out of the White House in handcuffs, taken to the nearest public stockade. i'd be waiting there with my basket of rotting tomaTOES!!
sorry, just day-dreaming there...

If he says something is bad he must view it as a threat. Typical that he would try to use 9/11 as a partisan political waepon. In doing so he disrespects all the people who have died in those attacks and in our war on terror. Everything is upside down in Rove's world of politics...so if he claims we are anti-american it actually means we are patriots. Attack...attack...attack.
And I agree with the gadfly...
Schumer was far too polite to Rove. Schumer should have torn Rove a new asshole.

We should be tearing Rove apart for invoking 9/11 as part of a partisan political attack. I am seriously fucking pissed!!!!! That is outrageous!!!

I'm wondering if Rove kind of blew a gasket here. Is this his usual m.o.? His actions have always been evil, but during his press appearances he seems to try to strike a tone of "well ahm just trying to be a reasonable guy..." The ones I've seen anyway. Josh seems to think it was a premeditated stab to keep the debate polarized, and maybe it was. But would he be saying these kinds of things if Bush's poll numbers were in the 60s? I doubt it. Seems like there's genuine worry behind the curtain.

Boy, it sure would feel wickedly good to watch some big bruiser kick Karl Rove's ass. Wouldn't that be neat!? You bet it would.

I'm looking forward to a series of show-trials a-la circa 1930s USSR. It'll be good for the economy, for the stagnant newspaper business and TV networks. It'll make our troops safer too.

The extreme statements by Republicans are made by the most powerful men in the country, people like Tom DeLay and Karl Rove. The extremist statements by "Democrats" are made by fringe entertainers like Ward Churchill.
I get tired of saying the same thing all the time, but it's been true all the time. Democrats have a lot of trouble realizing how extreme the assault is going to be. These really are not normal times. Rove wants to destroy the Democratic Party and the two-party system.

Or is anyone forgetting the 2004 election? This is pure Rove.

Liberals saw the towers fall and thought "We have to kill the people who did this"
Conservatives thought "This just completes the trifecta we needed to advance our political agenda"
Of course, if Gore had been president, instead of going on vacation, he would have increased the alert when he was warned and may well have prevented 9/11.
I am dumbfounded at how weak liberals had to be to allow conservatives to claim 9/11 as their issue.
Their is a serious problem that Michael Moore is a political outsider and Karl Rove is the campaign manager.
No mainstream liberals have made any attempt to put Bush or the Republicans on the defensive about 9/11.

No fair Al. Rove gets toasty at a conservative bash, jumps the shark in a serious way, and all you can do is jump on Matt's bandwagon? I'd honestly like to see the the Republican talking points on this one, or perhaps the memo hasn't gone out yet?

I must admit that occasionally I get frustrated enough to want bad things to happen to America. But the catastrophe I hope for (in moments of weakness) is precisely that Rove and his ilk are successful beyond their wildest dreams.
Roe v Wade overturned would result mainly in an epidemic of red-state teen pregnancy (esp when combined with "abstinence only" sex ed, and contraception drastically less available). Vouchers, along with prayer and creationism in the public schools that remain, will turn the red-state educational system into an array of Christian madrassahs, rendering the graduates even less employable than they are now. And the abolition of Social Security will result in an explosion of elderly poverty, with the poorer red states least able to take up the slack locally.
I realize this is nasty stuff, and most of the time I realize that it is wrong and I am my brother's keeper after all. But the point is: if you really hate America, of course you want nothing more than for Bush and Rove to succeed.

Yeah, I have a call in to RNC headquarter wondering where the memo is. If we Republicans believed in unions, I'd almost think they were on strike over there.

Michael, it's such a relief to hear you say that. I, too, am committed to jihad and I love terrorists. I will not be truly happy until I see Osama bin Laden in the Oval Office spitting on a crucifix, and every freedom-loving American is in chains. Thank you for breaking the silence.

Rove gets away with comments such as these because the Democrats are viewed as weak on National Security.
When and if that ever changes (and I for one hope it does), the Dems might regain power again - but not until then.

It's kind of sad, really, but in reading the blogs you do see that there is a substantial portion of the wingnutosphere that actually, honestly believes liberals are traitors who want to see america defeated.
It's almost funny, in a way.....i once posted somewhere that there were 2 possible explanations for why the press kept publishing bad news about iraq. 1 is, things are going badly. The other is, the media is completely taken over by traitorous, liberal fifth columners who secretly desire the success of Islamic Jihad and the destruction of America, and they are universally lying across the mediascape in order to demoralize red staters and throw the war effort into a downward spiral patriotic americans can never escape from.
which one of those explanations sounds reasonable to you, and which one like paranoid lunacy? hm.....

We haven't had a good "how do you kill a vampire/zombie/whatever?" post since Matt moved to these fancy new digs. Do we drive a stake through Rove's heart, cut off his head, smother him in wolfbane? If we're really the party of ideas, let's come up with some!

As long as Liberals agree with Rove that America is engaged in a Global War on Terror, then, Liberals should agree with him that statements such as Durbin's give aid and comfort to America's enemies and tread near the treasonous.
If you believe as I do that there are a small number of dangerous Muslim zealots wandering about the world who have to be tracked down and put out of their misery, then, Rove's conclusion is aberrant.
On 9/11 at Barksdale AFB, Bush promised to "hunt down and punish those responsible for these cowardly acts." Couldn't agree more!
On 9/20 before Congress, Bush said, "Our war on terror begins with Al Qaeda, but it does not end there. It will not end until every terrorist group of global reach has been found, stopped, and defeated."
Where was the Liberal outrage, then? In for a penny, boys, in for a dime.

Right on Matt.
The very best news for progressives would be a humiliating defeat of the U.S. by the Iraq insurgents (freedom fighters). That would likely sweep progressivs to power and they could proceed to downsize the military and use the proceeds for domestic goodies.
Durbin is playing this just right by giving the Arab propaganda machine Senatorial sound bites associating U.S. troups with Nazis. I don't know why the coward apologized.
