A Few Site Updates

A few notes on the site.  We're still working on our Table for One archive.  But until then you can still read Sen. Edwards' guest blog here.  Also, in conjunction with our new Books discussion table we're going to be hosting what we're tentatively calling virtual book readeings.  An author will discuss their new book, perhaps post a small portion of it, and take questions from readers.  If you have suggestions for who you'd like to see invite, let us know either by email or by posting to the Books table.

As usual, if you have comments, complaints or suggestions for the site, please post them to our Cafe Management table.  Click "Discuss" under MyTPMCafe and choose "Cafe Management" on the pull-down menu.

I've had to stop using the Firefox browswer on your site for posting. There's a lot of functionality that is missing in the comment window using Firefox.

If you can be more specific we may be able to fix that.  reply here or send to comments@tpmcafe.com

Couldn't cut and paste at all. Had to type in the quotes and links for a comment a little bit ago. Also couldn't get an image to work right using the image insert function.

For the moment, image insertion is disabled.  The button shouldn't bear there either and we're working on that.  On cutting and pasting, do you mean it literally wouldn't allow you to paste in?

Josh-- I am a fan, but the new site is really confusing.  I find it hard to find and follow individual topics -- i.e. Dean / Downing st memo etc.  Instead, it appears what I see and react to on the site is pretty random.

I would suggest that instead of focusing so much on the authors, you give equal weight to the content- or at least provide a current and continuously updated topic index-- so people can jump to what they are interested in.  Maybe because I am a long time user of dKos and I like the diary scroll feature, your site seems difficult to me.  But nevertheless, I do like topical type of scroll or index.

I am using Firefox and I can cut and paste, but I have to use the old standys - ctl-c and ctl-v.  Right clicking gives me other things, not the little edit menu.

Great idea, I would LOVE an authors section.  I am so often left to my own decision making when picking out books.  This makes for some great reading, but I can't help but wonder if I don’t' have some gaps in my library.
Tech issues can get you down, but don't let it keep you away from this great site.  Every new car off the line has a few recalls.  The kinks will get worked out soon enough, but only if you let the powers that be know about it.

By the way, if given an opportunity I would be happy to add a category to my blog entries (mine would be easy,  as long as a random category is available).  This might help folks who wish to search topics.  All in all I love this layout.  Thank you for the outlet.

I think Kathleen from CO just defined the problem better than me :-)

Making links to pages elsewhere on the site just doesn't work from the diaries.  I've tried hand-typing the HTML and that doesn't work, and the make link java button appends an extra bunch of text within the url so that it either double nests the link in the comments directy, or in the story and comments directoy - referring then to directories which don't exist so the link doesn't work.   This even happened in a post Josh did yesterday to dgreer's diary, so I don't know if it FireFox specific.

Example this should have been the link included in the thread Josh posted the broken link in but instead it links to this.
Note: on Preview the first two of these links ARE working - if they aren't working when this posted - the problem is only when posting, and not when previewing.

We'll look into this.

Since most posts - especially at the Coffee House - are severely truncated, it would be very useful to be able to move from expanded post to expanded post (the way Movable Type comments pages work, for instance). It's distracting to have to select an article, return to the homepage, select the next article, etc.

This is a good point.  I'll try to think about how we can solve this problem.

Why are my comments automatically receiving 3 ratings when I post, without any other user rating my post as such?

Is anybody else experiencing this "pre-rating" problem? Is this supposed to be happening?

avatar

Josh changed it

Ben, Josh addresses the pre-rating in Cafe Management under the Pick an Issue Table pulldown menu to the right.

Ditto on the Firefox, can't cut or paste in comments or on blog. On another note, the format for posting seems convoluted with so many bells and whistles that it makes it, should I say, tiresome. An option for streamlining comments viewing would be nice so those of us who hate scoop (or whatever it's called) can be a little more comfortable...for instance the ability to turn off ratings and have peoples responses posted in order they are written would be a pleasing touch. I'd take the old haloscan style of comments with a simple 'submit' button anyday over this godawful mess. Feel free to grade me down for my mutiny on the rating system.

Please invite James R. Ault, Jr.

author of "Spirit and Flesh
Life in a Fundamentalist Baptist Church"

This book explains the where fundamentalism came from in a way that will help us meet the legitimate requests of the Right and separate that from the antagonistic way those core needs are showing up on the political stage these days.

I would really appreciate a Books discussion table too, and would like to make a request: That we the audience of said authors be given enough notice to read their books before their scheduled arrival at the "Cafe".

As a preoccupied software geek, I would like to lurk (mostly) and participate (sometimes)  in such discussions, but it would be much more effective if I were prepared.

A "PS: to Josh": TPM Cafe is a well-done site (technically) and a treasure (socially). Thanks. I am a Firefox user (Linux *only* :-) since what I do is embedded Linux development) and appreciate the technical hints to be found here.

I, too, applaud upcoming author discussions. I hope you'll include some fiction. John Le Carre, for example, would be great.

And thanks for working on Firefox compatibility.

This is a fabulous site, and I look forward to seeing it evolve.

Josh,

Great site.  Thanks.

Maybe it's just me, but I'm finding the threads hard to follow.  Sometimes, the comments are way out of order numerically.  I presume it's supposed to be that way, but I don't follow it.

and I'll be damned if I'll go back to Explorer if I can avoid it.
